Salsoul is the ninth studio album by trail;blazing Filipino African American singer Joe Bataan. The term "Salsoul" was born out of Bataan's love for salsa and soul, whjch developed during his youth in New York's Spanish Harlem. On Salsoul, the listener can get the full scope of Bataan's many talents. Ballads such as "Mujer Mia" and "Peace, Friendship, Solidarity" allow his heartfelt vocals to soar. The funky instrumental "Latin Strut", showcases his skills as a pianist and arranger. Bataan's Aftro-Cuban rendition of the jazz standard "When Sunny Gets Blue", reaches new heights, delivering a powerful, timeless reinterpretation - that of a unique performer inspired by bringing together different genres and cultures. Such was the impact of Bataan's new sound, that "Salsoul" served as the catalyst for the creation of a label by the same name. Formed by brothers Joesph, Kenneth , and Stanley Cayre, Salsoul Records speraheaded a new generation of charismatic artists that, influenced by soul, funk, and Latin dance rhythms, gave the label a signature sound.
